Case Study: Sauven
See their website here: http://www.sauven-marking.co.uk/
At a glance
Sauven Marking wanted to replace their Small Business Server 2000. This normally requires several day’s disruption while the new server is configured and each workstation is removed from the old server and joined to the new one. DCSL used their expertise in Swing Migration to ensure that there was no downtime at all.
Background
Sauven is a leading manufacturer and global supplier of the latest ink jet printers to the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, industrial and electronics industries for in line product coding, marking, (printing) and identification.
The Challenge
Switch servers without being noticed. Migrate SQL, Exchange, and other data. Along with backup hardware.
The Solution
Swing Migration
The benefits of Swing migration:
- Save money because the upgrade project is simpler, more predictable
- Have minimal business downtime, as little as 1-3 hours, not a weekend, not a day.
- Have the confidence of an operational server running at all times in the process.
- Get Business Productivity without Snags! Put an end to confusing user desktop changes with server updates. It saves money, ends the surprises, makes this transparent the staff, so there’s less disruption or retraining issues.
- Have "nothing to do" for an Undo.
Summary
DCSL spent a total of one day on site. First visit with a temp server was to take a snapshot of the Active Directory and other settings. The new server was built with this snapshot and tested. Once completed, the new server (a mirror image of the old one but with the latest version of Small Business Server) was installed at Sauven. The data was copied into the already prepared file locations.
